- Alternative technology:
Malewa Trust has recently collaborated with the Good Earth Trust (GET) UK to provide alternative building technology using the interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks. This has initiated the start of the Malewa Trust resource and demonstration site. The site has been set up at Langa Langa and acts as a training and demonstration centre with the objective of selling the idea of alternative and economic building methods. Currently the site boasts of a three-roomed house/office block, toilet and water tank. Malewa Trust is looking to expand the resource centre to incorporate examples of other alternative technologies, including energy saving stoves, solar lighting and alternative farming.
- Training opportunities:
The Pan African Conservation package (PACE) is a solution-based syllabus designed to spread simple solutions to environment problems within communities. From fuel saving stoves to rainwater harvesting, compost making to forest product certification. It aims to share information about the environment and the very practical ways in which people are addressing common environmental problems. Malewa trust has been using this module for environmental education for local schools as well as local communities.
- Lower Malewa Water Resource Users Association:
We have collaborated with the Lower Malewa WRUA to try and address issues affecting the Malewa River catchments areas. Malewa Trust has facilitated workshops with the organisation to address issues on water users, re-forestation as well as training farmers on better farming practices that do not negatively affect the Malewa and Turasha rivers.
- Community Trainings:
Malewa Trust conducted training for Kipipiri farmers in conjunction with Malewa River Ecosystem Forum (MARECOF). The training included training of trainers as well as eco-agriculture. The five day training focused on environmental issues affecting farmers in Kipipiri, good farming practices including, composting, conservation agriculture, inter cropping, terracing as well as the use of non-chemical based fertilizers and insecticides.
- Wildlife Management:
Malewa Trust was instrumental in the establishment of the Kigio Wildlife Conservancy and the re-introduction of a herd of Rothschild Giraffe from Lake Nakuru National Park and White Rhino from Lewa conservancy.
- Research:
Malewa Trust also offers accommodation and opportunities to research students and academics to carry out conservation, community and science-based projects. The programmes are very popular amongst people taking a year off before or after university.
- Partnerships:
Three neighboring primary schools (Mwega, Murindati & Kimbo) are already partnered with overseas schools. The MT into environmental education channels money raised and alternative technology development projects within the local schools
