Chris Campbell Clause - Founder & Current Chairman

Chris initiated the formation of the 3500 acre Kigio Wildlife Conservancy in 2000 and during his tenure as the Managing Director of the Conservancy he was instrumental in the introduction of endangered wildlife species (Rothschild Giraffe and White Rhino). But whilst this conservation initiative was a resounding success, it soon became apparent that the biodiversity in the adjoining river valley was now under considerable threat from the ever increasing human settlement. Tree felling, charcoal burning and firewood harvesting had resulted in severe catchment degradation and the rivers and streams were in danger of drying up for the first time in living memory. Before it was too late Chris felt compelled to enlighten the local people on the importance of environmental education and conservation in this very important river valley. The Malewa Trust was set up with this in mind.

Joining Kigio Wildlife Conservancy in 2002, Milli soon become an invaluable assistant in the daily management of the conservancy whilst also being the lead facilitator providing outdoor education and training for the business side of the conservancy.

She immediately offered her free time to the Malewa Trust to promote environmental education to the local primary schools as well as organizing visits for these children to see the ongoing conservation efforts within the conservancy. Later on she introduced an appropriate environmental education package, Pan African Conservation Education (PACE) compiled and offered by Tusk Trust UK. With generous support form the Gemini Foundation in the UK the Malewa Trust Environmental Education Centre was built close to the banks of the Malewa river.

Having initiated the long standing partnership between Oundle School in the UK and Malewa during the early years of development he also witnessed the destruction of the habitat in the river valley. So he saw at first hand the growing need for environmental education for local children and was delighted to join the board of trustees in early 2009.

Mary - Management

She joined the Malewa Trust in 2008 as the first and only full time employee. She has been an inspiration to the local community with her individual drive and determination to make positive change. Mary also participated in a 3 month exchange programme on Vancouver Island Canada in 2008 where she spent her time at an ECO village and organic farm. This experience has been very valuable in setting up the Malewa Trust Eco homestead and organic farm.
