THE FUTURE?
Despite Malewa River Lodge having initiated development in four
neighbouring schools and assisted with several micro enterprises,
there is a ‘life time’ of work for the newly formed
Malewa Trust.
CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT
The Trustees believe that the success of the schools partnerships
can be replicated in the corporate world. ‘Corporate Social
Investment’ (CSI) is becoming the norm within multi national
corporations and there is a place for ‘Partnerships’
with Malewa Trust. Funds are always needed for conservation and
education and it is anticipated that corporate companies can participate
in team building and challenge course activities at the new centre.
They will have the opportunity to be advised by the Malewa Trust
on appropriate partnerships with local community projects to enhance
education, develop schools, build roads, improve communication,
cultivate tree nurseries, and thus improve job opportunities, health,
education and the standard of living in the local community.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
CENTRE
During 2005 – 2006 the Malewa Trust has been supported by
several donor organisations to build an environmental education
centre on the boundary of the Kigio Wildlife Conservancy. The main
building of the ‘Bush school’ is under construction
and is nearly completed, but further funds are still required to
furnish the centre and provide a comprehensive library of informative
environmental books, films and documentaries etc.
The intention is that once the information centre
is open to the public, environmental education films will be shown
to local children each Sunday afternoon and they will be encouraged
to take a tree seedling home with them to plant. Eventually they
will also be introduced to IT technology and become computer literate,
and have access to worldwide knowledge on environmental issues and
conservation. Through this media they will also be able to communicate
via email with children from the ‘partnership’ schools
overseas.
With better knowledge, Kenyans will finally have
an opportunity to be good ‘custodians’ of their country,
which will ultimately lead to better living conditions for everyone.
The Malewa Trust is seeking partners to make this
vision a reality.
